Bowling Green School’s Breanna Tobey
Bowling Green School senior Breanna Tobey plays shortstop for the Lady Buccaneers and their season began yesterday.
Last season, Tobey won the District 4AAA Best Defensive Player Award after posting a .914 fielding percentage.
At the plate, she hit .345, reached base at a .413 clip and slugged .518.
Bowling Green School first-year coach David Hood Burris, who was an assistant at Bowling Green last season, praised his shortstop.
“She’s a senior this year,” Burris said. “She’s a leader. She’s a tough player. She plans to continue her softball career once she finishes here. She’s verbally committed to playing at Belhaven next year. This year, she will play shortstop and bat leadoff for us.”
What do you enjoy most about playing softball? Why?
The girls on the team become more like family and you have eight-plus girls to always have your back.
What do you like best about being a student athlete?
I love representing the school through a sport that I love with all my heart.
Who have been the most influential coaches in your school sports career? Why?
Coach Hood and (former Bowling Green coach) Meghan (Dyer). Both coaches gave me a lot of confidence, while other coaches I’ve had have not. I’ve had coaches that would talk down about me in the past, but (Hood and Dyer) do the exact opposite. They see stuff in me that I don’t even see in myself and they tell me what that stuff is. Although Coach Meghan is gone now, since she and Coach Hood have been my coaches, I have gained a lot of self-confidence and I don’t let the mess-ups get into my head like they used to.
Who is your favorite athlete? Why?
A.J. Andrews because of her commitment and determination that she showed starting softball late at 13 years old. She is now one of the most well-known softball players. She’s also very confident about herself and what she does. I want to be that kind of athlete.
Favorite team?
University of Tennessee
Best thing about living in Washington Parish?
It’s a very small community, so you know everybody.
