Franklinton well represented on top team

Five Franklinton softball players are first-team all-district players for District 8-4A.
Catcher Missouri Varnado, infielders Ashlyn Ard and Brylie Fowler and outfielders Ashlyn Welch and Bailey Brooks are first-team all-district players.
This season, Varanado hit .315 with a .390 on-base percentage and .452 slugging percentage. Varnado drove in 20 runs and scored 11 runs. She doubled six times and two triples.
Ard put up a .415 batting average, .462 on-base percentage and .573 slugging percentage. Ard hit a homer, drove in 14 runs and scored 31 runs. Ard had nine extra base hits, adding six doubles and two triples.
Fowler tallied a .301 average to go with a .414 on-base percentage and .397 slugging percentage. Fowler hit a homer, drove in nine, scored 21 runs and doubled four times.
Welch was a .391 hitter with a .459 slugging percentage and .422 on-base percentage. Welch posted nine RBIs, 17 runs scored and she had two doubles.
Brooks batted .333 this season with a .370 on-base percentage and .493 slugging percentage. Brooks tallied one homer, 18 RBIs, 14 runs scored and nine doubles.
The Lady Demons’ second-team players are pitcher Aleigha Fussell, infielder Kierstan Allen and utility player Bailey Spears.
Fussell had a 3.32 ERA this season. She tallied 102 strikeouts and 55 walks over 147-1/3 innings.
Allen was a .299 hitter with a .347 on-base percentage and .358 slugging percentage. Allen drove in 13 runs, scored nine runs and she doubled twice and tripled once.
Spears posted a .250 batting average, .289 on-base percentage and she had a .286 slugging percentage. Spears tallied eight RBIs, scored 15 runs and doubled three times.
Franklinton’s all-district honorable mention players are Sydney Willis and Laynea Stafford.
Willis was a .250 hitter and she reached base at a .308 clip and had a .333 slugging percentage. Willis posted 13 RBIs, five runs scored and she doubled five times.
Stafford posted a .383 on base percentage with five runs batted in and she scored seven runs.
The Lady Demons had a historic 2018 season. The team captured its first playoff victory since joining Class 4A with an 8-7 win over Pearl River in the opening round.
Franklinton, which was the 16th-seeded playoff team, was defeated in the regional round by top-seeded and state runner up Morgan City, 8-0. Morgan City lost to third-seeded DeRidder, 5-1, in the state championship game.
