Bowling Green School’s softball team will begin the regular season Friday, July 27, with a road game against Brookhaven Academy.
The Lady Buccaneers are the only softball team in Washington Parish that is in MAIS.
David Hood Burris, who was an assistant coach last season for the Lady Buccaneers, is now the team’s head coach.
“We’re really young, but if it makes any sense, at the same time, we are really experienced,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids that’s going to play a lot.”
Burris said that he will have several freshmen and sophomore starters, and maybe some eighth graders.
The team will feature just three seniors in shortstop Breanna Tobey, centerfielder Anna Beninato and Whitney Bond. Tobey and Beninato will start.
Burris said probably his best overall player and biggest leader is Tobey, who will lead off.
“After that, I’ve got four ninth graders that are going to contribute a lot,” Burris said.
Burris said two of the freshmen started as eighth graders last year in corner infielder Cassidy Spears and pitcher Kylee Burris, who coach Burris said can play anywhere.
The two pitchers got a lot of time pitching last year in junior Madelyn Burch and Burris. Bowling Green’s No. 1 pitcher is Burch.
The Lady Buccaneers reached the South State Tournament last season.
Bowling Green begins this season with a pair of road games with the first one on Friday, July 27. The second is set for Monday, July 30 at Oak Forest Academy.
The 2018 opening home game takes place on Tuesday, July 31 against Presbyterian Christian School.
