FHS’ Verret, MHS’ Smith All-Region players

A pair of Washington Parish baseball players have been honored in a big way.
Franklinton junior Wyatt Verret and Mt. Hermon School sophomore Colby Smith have both been named to the 2018 Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association All-Region 9 Team.
The two players made the team at the utility position and both were strong on the mound as well as at the plate.
On the hill, Verret went 4-2 with two saves this season and he had an ERA of 1.75. Verret averaged nearly a strikeout an inning. He posted 34 strikeouts in 36 innings and he walked 12 hitters.
At the plate, Verret hit .388 with a home run, 18 RBIs and he scored 22 runs while adding seven doubles.
Smith was also solid.
He posted a 7-1 record with a 3.33 ERA on the mound. He struck out 81 hitters over 56-1/3 innings.
At the plate, Smith hit .391 and drove in 26 runs.
The teams feature players from five parishes, including Washington, St. Tammany, Livingston and St. Helena.
St. Thomas Aquinas’ Champ Artigues is the Hitter of the Year and Northshore’s Brett Sanchez is the Pitcher of the Year.
The pitchers are St. Thomas Aquinas’ Alex Egan, St. Paul’s School’s Jacob Scherer, Denham Springs’ Dawson Albin, Holden’s Dustin Rushing and Covington’s Zach Smith.
The catchers are Northshore’s Hunter May and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Sam Smith.
On the infield are Denham Springs’ Cade Doughty, Northshore’s Christian Garcia, Maurepas Hunter Dupuy, Mandeville’s Brandon Mooney and Hammond’s Michael Lee.
In the outfield are Loranger’s Luke Colona, St. Paul’s School’s Grant Grosch, Northlake Christian School’s Cole Bilbo and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Brandon Tallo.
Besides Verret and Smith, the rest of the utility players are St. Thomas Aquinas’ Luke Sweeney, Northshore’s Karl Mocherman, St. Paul’s School’s Beau Neelis and Mandeville’s Jake Laws.
