Bogalusa Venturer Crew 313 will attempt to defend its titles in the Bayou Liberty Canoe and Pirogue Race that takes place on Sunday in Slidell.
The crew was well-represented on the leaderboards in last year’s event.
Crew 313 was victorious in the pirogue division for 8-12 year olds, 13-17s and the men’s division, which is 18-older.
The crew was in the top three spots for all three of the events.
Crew 313 had the top-six place in the boys open aluminum division.
“We’ve pretty well dominated both the pirogue and the canoe division, but a lot of those kids are no longer paddling because they graduated and they are working,” Crew 313 advisor Col. Bobby Miller said. “I have quite a few new paddlers. They’ve been looking real good in practice. It’s a fun race. The kids enjoy it and it’s a good spectator race, so we look forward to rebooting.”
The races begin at 1 p.m. and the length is determined by age. The longest race is about four miles.
Practice continues for competitions that are coming up. Crew 313 started paddling on the Pearl River Navigational Canal this past Tuesday.
The crew’s next event takes place June 19-21 when they compete in the Istrouma Area Council Explorer/Venturer Bogue Chitto 110-mile Canoe Race.
