VHS’s Kemp takes 5th in pair of events at state

BATON ROUGE — Varnado’s Armontee Kemp finished fifth in two events and the school had several athletes that competed in the 2018 Class 1A state meet that took place Friday, May 4, at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of LSU.
Kemp was fifth in the high jump and the 110-meter hurdles.
Kemp high jumped 5 feet, 10 inches and ran the 110s in 16.16. Logansport’s John Stephens won the title in the high jump at 6-6 and Haynesville’s Lance Grider was victorious in the 110s in 15.20.
Kemp reached state in both events last season and took seventh place in both. Last year, Kemp high jumped 5-8 and ran a 17.03 in the 110 hurdles.
Two Varnado males competed in the javelin.
James Williams and Darian Vargas were sixth and seventh in the javelin with throws of 124-3.25 and 120-10, respectively. Cedar Creek’s Tripp Marcus was victorious after throwing a 206-9.5.
Vargas competed in the javelin at state last year and was ninth with a throw of 125-5.
Three females competed in state for Varnado, including Jalisia Jackson, Quierria Bickham and Jaden Foster.
Bickham took eighth in the long jump after posting a 15-1.75. Jonesboro-Hodge’s Kaprecia’ Cowans won at 18-8.25.
This was Bickham’s third-straight year of reaching state in the long jump.
Last year, Bickham took fourth after jumping 16-6, and she took sixth the year before with a distance of 15-8.
Jackson was eighth in the 300 hurdles after running a 52.53. Merryville’s Andrea Cournoyer was the state champion at 45.58.
Foster took ninth in the javelin with a throw of 70-10. Ouachita Christian’s Olivia Mccreary won the championship at 120-8.
