VHS’s Bickham captures long jump in regional meet

Varnado’s Quierra Bickham was victorious in the long jump and two of her teammates also qualified for the state meet at the Region 3-1A Meet that took place at Ponchatoula on April 24.
Bickham long jumped 16 feet, 0.5 inches to capture the event. Kentwood’s Lakirsta Johnson was second at 15-11.
Two other Varnado athletes are also headed to regionals.
Jaden Foster was second in the javelin after a throw of 73-6. Covenant Christian Academy’s Antonette Boquet won at 83-9.
Jalisia Jackson was third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.08 seconds. East Iberville’s Destiny Riley won with a time of 50.66.
The meet was a state qualifier. The top three finishers qualified for the state meet, which will take place Friday, May 4, at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.
Varnado is the only Class 1A school in Washington Parish.
Several other Varnado athletes also competed in the regional meet.
Bickham was fourth in the 100 meters, with a time of 12.96. Ascension Catholic’s Arianne Linton won in 12.61.
Destiny Keys was fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 30-10. Johnson won that event at 34-3.5
Varnado’s 4×100 relay team was fourth with a time of 54.94. The team included Bickham, Keys, Jackson and Foster. Kentwood won in 52.52.
East Iberville won the team competition with 93 points, as 10 teams posted points.
St. Martin’s was second with 78. Varnado was seventh, with 34 points.
