Several Wildcats heading to state

Several Varnado athletes and a Wildcats relay team are headed to the Class 1A state meet.
Armontee Kemp, Darian Vargas and James Williams, along with the team’s 4×100 relay team, qualified for the state meet by coming in the top three at the Region 3-1A at Ponchatoula on April 24.
Kemp qualified in two events. He finished second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet. West St. John’s John Holmes won the event at 6-4.
Kemp was also third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.54 seconds. East Iberville’s Anthony Davis was the winner in 15.46.
Vargas and Williams qualified for state in the javelin with throws of 132-3 and 126-7, respectively. West St. John’s Jonathan Porter won with a distance of 135-2.
The Wildcats’ 4×100 relay team is headed to state with a third-place finish at 45.59. The team featured Korterrius Mingo, Darrius Harry, Jacorrius Bickham and Kevis Brooks.
The Class 1A state meet will take place Friday, May 4, at Bernie Moore Stadium, which is located on the campus of LSU. Varnado is the only Class 1A team in Washington Parish.
Several other Wildcats also competed at regionals.
Quincy James took fourth in the 400 with a time of 54.21. Holmes was victorious in 50.03.
Jarvis James was fourth for the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 9 seconds, as Thomas Daigle ran a 2:01 to win.
Brooks was fifth in the 200 at 23.77. Southern Lab’s Reginald Johnson was the winner in 22.30.
Jadarrell Magee was fifth in the high jump at 5-6.
Cameron Allen and Caleb Allen were fifth and sixth in the triple jump with distances of 39-0 and 38-5.5. Dyson recorded a 43-6.25 to win.
Kemp took fifth in the 300-hurdles with a time of 43.83. Kentwood’s Cornelius Dyson won in 42.31.
Bickham and Kemp ran sixth and eighth in the 100 with times of 11.49 and 12.40. Kentwood’s Raymontre Palmer won in 10.71.
Adrian Bickham ran sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 19.15.
Quincy James was seventh for the long jump with a distance of 19-7. Dyson won at 21-1.5.
Varnado’s 4×400 relay team was fifth and the 4×200 group was sixth. The Wildcats ran the 4×400 in 3:50 and the 4×200 in 1:36. The 4×400 team included Cameron Allen, Caleb Allen, Vargas and Quincy James. The 4×200 squad had Mingo, Harry, Brooks and Jacorrius Bickham. Southern Lab won the 4×400 in 3:50 and Kentwood was the 4×200 winner at 1:29.
Kentwood won the team competition with 94 points in a close finish at the top, as 12 teams posted points.
West St. John was second with 91, followed by Southern Lab’s 89, East Iberville’s 65 and Varnado’s 56.
