Pine’s Cotton wins long jump

Pine’s Markell Cotton captured the long jump and he and two other teammates qualified for regionals in the District 10-2A Meet that took place last Wednesday at Christ Episcopal School in Covington.
Cotton long jumped 20 feet, 10 inches.
Amite’s Sly Carroll was second at 19-8.5.
Wednesday’s meet was a qualifying meet. The top four finishers from each event advanced to the regional meet. The Region 3-2A Meet will take place today at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
Pine is the only team from Washington Parish in District 10-2A.
Cotton also qualified in the triple jump with a distance of 40-0.75, which was good for second place. Carroll won the triple jump at 41-8.25.
Joe Whaley and Jakari Hart both qualified for regionals.
Whaley advanced with third-place finishes in the shot put and javelin.
He recorded a 34-5 in the shot put and a 107-9 in the javelin. Pope John Paul II’s Cameron Hammers won the shot put at 39-2 and teammate Peyton Smith was victorious in the javelin with a throw of 141-11.
Hart was fourth in the discus with a distance of 84-7. Hammers was the winner with a throw of 113-0.
Several other competed for Pine.
Hart was fifth in the shot put at 30-7.
Whaley was fifth for the discus after posting a 81-8.
Blaine Kirkpatrick and Trent Barber ran fifth and sixth in the 800 meters, with times of 2 minutes, 28 seconds and 2:31. Amite’s Tyler Tucker won in 2:17.
Ethan Sinopoli was sixth in the 400 after completing the race in 1:04, as Independence’s Marvin Andrews ran it in 57.67 seconds to win.
Pope John Paul won a close meet by just one point after posting 86 and Amite was second, as five teams put up points.
Independence was third with 26, followed by Pine’s 21 and Northlake Christian School’s 18.
