Mt. Hermon’s Holmes captures 2 events at district meet

Mt. Hermon School’s Za’byeaus Holmes was a double-event winner in the District 7-B Meet and he qualified for three regional events. The Jackets’ 4×200 relay team was also victorious on Friday in the district meet at Broadmoor that was hosted by Runnels.
Holmes won the 200-meter and 400-meter races and he took second in the 100. Teammate Tyre Brumfield was fourth in the 200 with a time of 27.61.
Holmes captured the 200 in 25.25 seconds and the 400 in 55.39 seconds. Crescent City’s Eric Gross ran a 26.02 for second place in the 200, while Holden’s Kameron Page ran the 400 in 1 minute, 2 seconds in a second-place finish.
Holmes and teammate Lafell Thomas ran second and third, respectively, in the 100 with times of 12.08 and 12.47. Runnels’ John Spillane won in 12.07.
The Yellow Jackets bested the 4×200 in 1:41, as Maurepas was second in 1:50.
The group featured Brumfield, Keondre Bunch, Clinton Roux and Treyvon Roberts.
Friday’s meet was a qualifier. The top four finishers from each event advance to the regional meet. The regional meet will take place on Tuesday, April 24 at Midland High School. Mt. Hermon is the only local school in District 7-B.
Several more Mt. Hermon athletes qualified for regionals.
Tristan T. Brumfield took second in the 300-hurdles after a 53.23. Maurepas’ Zane Thompson was the winner in 51.45.
Tristan T. Brumfield and Tyre Brumfield were third and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, after running a 22.52 and a 22.96. Maurepas’ Hunter Dupuy won the event in 19.17.
Chance Rondo was fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:07. Runnels’ Sam Matthews won the event in 4:58.
Mt. Hermon’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams were both second after completing the races in 48.78 and 4:09. Maurepas won the 4×100 in 48.74 in a very close race while Runnels captured the 4×400 in 3:59.
The 4×100 team included Roux, Tyre Brumfield, Bunch and Roberts.
Mt. Hermon’s 4×400 team was Tristan Brumfield, Thomas, Roberts and Holmes.
Mt. Hermon had two field athletes qualify for regionals, in Thomas and Jeremy Bickham.
Thomas qualified fourth in the long jump with a distance of 17-feet, 10-inches. Gross was the long jump winner at 19-9.
Bickham was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 88-11. Holden’s Cole Forbes won the event at 133-8.
Several others competed in the meet for Mt. Hermon.
Daniel Watson ran fifth and sixth in the 1,600 and 800 with a times of 6:10 and 3:10. Runnels’ Matthews won the 800 in 2:06.
Tristan T. Brumfield was seventh in the long jump at 16-3.5.
Ljarvis Elzey took fifth and sixth in the discus and javelin after throws of 76-3 and 87-0. Holden’s John Sharp won the discus at 109-1.
Elzey and Tanner Johnston were sixth and seventh for the shot put with distances of 32-4 and 28-8.5. Maurepas’ Michael Vannapha won at 37-5.
