Lady Jacks drop home game to Sumner

Bogalusa got off to a strong start, but Jewel Sumner came back and won the District 7-3A game, 50-38, on Wednesday at BHS.

The Lady Jacks jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the game’s first 3:49.

Chloe Foster tallied the game’s first points with a bucket and one. She missed the free throw, but had given her club a 2-0 lead with 7:29 left in the first quarter.

Bianca Pittman collected an assist when she found Shaunte Chatmon for two and a 4-0 lead. Quantasia Lewis tallied the next five points for the Lady Jacks. She hit for three with 4:50 left and then grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback to give Bogalusa a 9-0 lead with 4:11 to go in the first quarter.

Jewel Sumner came back with eight unanswered points.

Alacia Brown put Jewel Sumner on the board by hitting a 3-pointer. Amya Brumfield hit a bucket, got fouled and converted the 3-point play to trim the lead to three. Brumfield drove for two more and Bogalusa’s lead was trimmed to 9-8 at the 2:33 mark of the first quarter.

Foster hit a putback shot after pulling down an offensive board with 37 seconds left in the opening period and the Lady Jacks took an 11-8 lead to the second quarter.

Bogalusa maintained a two-point lead at 13-11 with 6:05 left in the first half, but Jewel Sumner put up seven in a row. Brown gave Sumner its first lead on a 3-pointer. Jakeria Norman and Jamya Norman were good on a field goal each and Jewel Sumner led 18-13 with 4:09 left in the second quarter.

Bogalusa trimmed it to two with Chatmon hitting for two and Lewis splitting from the line to make it 18-16 with 3:10 left.

Jewel Sumner added to the lead before halftime and was ahead 25-18 at the break.

The lead went to double-digits in the third quarter with Jewel Sumner being up by as many as 11 at 33-22 and 35-24, which was the score through three. Sumner’s biggest lead in the game was 13 at 49-36 with 2:19 left in the fourth.

Bogalusa hung in. Chatmon hit a shot, got fouled and her free throw was good for the 3-point play on the first possession of the fourth quarter to make it 35-27, but Bogalusa could not get any closer in the 50-38 setback.

Chatmon tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Bogalusa.

Lewis also put up a double-double. She scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Lewis dished out an assist and made two steals. She was successful on a pair of 3-point attempts.

Foster recorded six points, five boards and an assist.

Samyra White pulled down eight rebounds while Pittman pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and made three steals, Mary Ladner tallied a steal and Prayja Bickham grabbed a rebound, recorded two assists and made two steals.

Brown led Sumner with 14 points that included two 3-pointers.

Worman posted 13.

Norman had 12.

Brumfield tallied eight while Nakeah Sims had two and Jayla Hayes added one for Jewel Sumner.
