COVINGTON — Bogalusa tallied a 1-1 record in the Hannan Hustle Tournament at Archbishop Hannan last Thursday and Friday.
Turnovers and defensive rebounding played key roles in Bogalusa’s 57-35 loss to French Settlement in the Lady Jacks’ opener Thursday.
“Coming off of the Christmas break, we really weren’t aggressive at all,” Jarvious Grayson said. “We’ve got to get back into the flow of things, so we’ve got to work hard. Defensive rebounds, turnovers — we just didn’t move without the ball well. We turned the ball over a lot. We just have to get aggressive.”
Bogalusa trailed just 6-4 with 3:10 left in the first quarter, but French Settlement scored the final 11 points of the period and had a 17-4 lead after one quarter.
The run began when Laurel Smiley hit for a 3-pointer. A backcourt steal led to Smiley converting a field goal for an 11-4 lead. Dannah Martin hit 3-pointers for the final six points of the period and it was 17-4 after one quarter.
Chloe Foster hit a free throw 49 seconds into the second quarter to bring the Lady Jacks within 12, but French Settlement posted the next 11 points and led 28-7.
Bogalusa trailed 34-14 at halftime.
Quantasia Lewis split from the free-throw line with 7:01 left in the second half to make it 34-15.
The Lady Jacks were unable to get any closer than 19 points, which they did a couple of times for the rest of the game in the 57-35 setback.
Lewis led Bogalusa with 13 points, which included a 3-pointer.
Foster posted seven points while Shaunte Chatmon recorded six, Bianca Pittman had five and Samyra White added two for the Lady Jacks.
Martin was French Settlement’s leading scorer with 27 points. She made eight 3-pointers.
Bailey Karpinski posted 11 points, which included three 3-pointers.
Payton Clouatre had eight while Serenity Smith and Smiley recorded six points each.
Bogalusa rebounded from the loss the following day by defeating Springfield, 45-41.
Lewis once again topped Bogalusa, as this time, she put up 19 points.
Chatmon posted 15 points for the Lady Jacks.
Foster and White recorded four each while Pittman scored three points in the victory for Bogalusa.
