Bogalusa had its two-game winning steak snapped Friday night with a 35-22 loss to Loranger in District 7-3A play.
The game got off to a tough start for the Lumberjacks, as Loranger kicked off short and the Wolves recovered the loose ball. That led to a 41-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Hookfin to Alex Williams. Austin Trahan, who converted his five extra points, was successful on the kick to make it 7-0 with 10:09 to go in the opening quarter.
Hookfin, who threw for 175 yards and ran for 123 more, accounted for four touchdowns — two passing and two rushing.
Bogalusa punted on the ensuing possession, but the Wolves muffed the kick and Sylas McGowan recovered the ball at Loranger’s 38.
Dianté Lenoir broke tackles and ran 25 yards to the 18 after Bogalusa committed a false start penalty. Tyrese Rousell got the call on the next play and scored on an end around for an 18-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was no good and it was 7-6 with 7:56 left in the first quarter. Lenoir tallied 95 yards on the ground and threw for 119 and a touchdown.
It stayed that way until the second period when Hoofkin connected with DeJuan Carter for another touchdown to make it 14-6 after Trahan’s extra point with 10:37 on the clock.
Bogalusa responded quickly. The Lumberjacks returned the kickoff to their 47. Lenoir gained 7, 9 and then 29 yards, setting up first-and-goal at the 8. Rousell got the call and scored once again. Lenoir ran in for two and the game was tied 14-14 with 9:27 to go.
But the Wolves scored the next 21 points.
Bogalusa’s defense forced a fourth-and-6 at Wolves’ 36, but jumped offsides. The Wolves attempted to punt. The snap was low and punter Luke Colona took off running and picked five yards for the first down. Four plays later, Hookfin broke free and scored on a 40-yard run. Trahan’s extra point made the score, 21-14.
Loranger’s Nick Scott intercepted a pass at his 35. The Wolves drove 65 yards and tallied on Hookfin’s one-yard sneak. The key play was Hookfin’s 56-yard run on the first play. Trahan added the point after for a 28-14 lead with 3:12 left in the second quarter and it stayed that way through halftime.
Williams ran it in from the 7 to end the first drive of the second half and Trahan’s point after capped off the Wolves scoring and they were up 35-14 with 8:46 left in the third quarter.
Bogalusa scored the game’s final point with five minutes left when Lenoir connected with Chas Smith on a 17-yard scoring play. Lenoir ran in for two more to make it 35-22.
Loranger recovered the onside kick and ran out the final 4:55.
“We played hard. We were down a couple of guys that would’ve really helped us out and we weren’t able to use them,” Bogalusa coach David Roberts said. “I told the kids that I thought this was for the district championship. I think probably Loranger will win it now. I don’t see anybody else beating them, so we missed an opportunity.”
Bogalusa falls to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in district. The Lumberjacks are off this week and will return to action Friday, Oct. 27, on the road against Jewel Sumner.
Loranger improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in league play.
