SPRINGFIELD — Pine jumped out to a 20-0 lead over Springfield through the first quarter and extended it to 30-0 by halftime, on the way to defeating the Bulldogs, 48-12, on homecoming night at Springfield in a District 9-2A contest Friday.

“We got off to a fast start offensively and defensively. We were able to get some of our young guys in at the end of the game, which is always nice,” Pine coach Bradley Seal said.

Pine scored three touchdowns in the first quarter.

Joey Seal opened the scoring with a 31-yard run seven plays into the game. Damarea Odom added a 4-yard run. Both two-point conversions failed and it was 12-0 with 6:24 left in the first period.

The second touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery from Spencer Hunt at Springfield’s 40.

Pine tallied again in the opening quarter when Seal connected with Markell Cotton on an 8-yard pass. Jakyran Handy was good for two and it was 20-0 with 54 seconds left and remained that way through one quarter.

It was the first of three touchdowns Seal threw to Cotton. Seal passed for 137 yards and three touchdowns.

“That’s something we wanted to kind of establish tonight is getting him into a rhythm, get him going and I was happy we were able to do that,” coach Seal said.

Cotton caught six passes for 103 yards and the three touchdowns. Jordan Anderson caught two passes for 38 yards.

Handy led a group of 10 players that had at least one rushing attempt. Handy finished with 149 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

“We counted on the offensive line, came off the ball and blocked well all night,” coach Seal said. “Glad we got Jakyran going; he ran the ball good all night.”

Pine added to its lead in the second quarter. The Raiders’ lead went to 22-0 at the 7:06 mark of the second. Springfield had the ball at its own 1 and attempted to punt, but the punter dropped the ball as he was standing in the back of the end zone and it went out of the back of the end zone for a safety.

Coach Seal praised his defense.

“Overall we played real well. They didn’t really do too much against our starters, so I was proud of them,” coach Seal said.

Pine went up 30-0 when Seal hit Cotton on a jump ball in the end zone. Ricardo Handy converted the two-pointer for a 30-0 lead at halftime.

Springfield scored on the opening drive of the second half on John’l Fryson’s 31-yard run. The extra point was blocked, and it was 31-6 with 8:55 left.

Seal connected with Cotton once more on a 30-yard pass and the Raiders missed the extra point. It was 36-6 with 3:41 on the clock and that was the score through three quarters.

Jakyran Handy hit paydirt on first-and-goal from the 21 on the first play of the fourth quarter. The extra point was no good, but Pine led 42-6.

Springfield made it 42-12 on Sawyer Blankenship’s 1-yard run, which was set up by Tyler Reed’s 85-yard run. The Bulldogs were unsuccessful for two, keeping it 42-12 at the 5:09 mark.

Pine’s Demillion Williams scored the final points for the Raiders on a 5-yard run with 1:49 showing. The two-point conversion was no good and that 48-12 was the final.

Pine (3-2, 1-1) faces Amite on the road Thursday. Springfield fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in district this season.
