Varnado was victorious over last year’s Class 2A state semifinalist St. Helena College & Career Academy, 34-6, on the road Friday night.
“We had just come off of a good win over Pine and we didn’t want to have a letdown and we felt like it was a statement game,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “I felt that we went out with purpose and showed that we are a good team with potential.”
The Wildcats scored a pair of defensive touchdowns.
Armontee Kemp returned an interception for a touchdown, and JoNathan Green scored on a fumble return.
Kemp also caught a touchdown from James Williams.
Williams scored two rushing touchdowns, and JaDarrell Magee tallied a 2-point conversion.
“I think we’re playing good football in all aspects,” Shaffett said. “A lot of guys are stepping up.”
Varnado is 2-1 this season and will be back in action Friday night when the Wildcats travel to North Vermillion.
Last Friday’s game was the first loss for St. Helena, which fell to 2-1.
