Varnado coach Scott Shaffett seemed pretty happy with the way his team played in its scrimmage on the road against Independence on Thursday.
“We did great,” Shaffett said. “We came out the first three series — I thought we could’ve done a little better — but after that, we pretty much rolled. We looked physical on both sides of the ball.
“Offensively, JaDarrell Magee played tough, some hard nosed football. J.J. (quarterback James Williams) played well, took control and had some signs of the old J.J. before his injury. Both lines played extremely well. I felt we controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”
Varnado scored four touchdowns in the scrimmage. Magee finished with three touchdowns, all on the ground.
Jaccourious Bickham scored the other touchdown on a 70-yard pass from Williams.
Defensively, Shaffett said the front line did a great job. He said the outside linebackers did a phenomenal job and the defensive backs played well.
Varnado competes in The Our Lady of Angels Washington Parish Jamboree at Franklinton on Friday. The Wildcats play in the first game against Bogalusa, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
