Bowling Green’s Shelby McDonald has signed a letter of intent to attend Baton Rouge Community College and play softball.
McDonald went to a camp at the beginning of October and McDonald said that is when first-year BRCC coach Lana Bowers noticed her.
“In December, I took a tour of the campus and talked to the players and they all said how much they were enjoying playing for her,” McDonald said.
This season, McDonald hit .310, reached base at a .383 clip and slugged .452 in the Lady Bucs’ 14 regular-season, non-tournament games. In those same games, McDonald scored 11 runs, drove in three and had two doubles and a pair of triples.
McDonald did a solid job of making contact. She struck out just four times in 47 plate appearances.
This season, McDonald was a first-team all-district player and she made the MAIS AAA/AAAA All-Star Game.
McDonald was part of a team that finished third in the South State and Class AAA Tournaments this season.
McDonald talked about her favorite moment at Bowling Green.
“Getting to play with all of the girls and getting to play under coach Meghan (Dyer). I had a lot of good teammates,” she said. “Coach Meghan is a really good coach. She knows the game and I like the way she approaches girls after we make a mistake, and she was always there if you wanted to get extra work in.”
McDonald played mainly shortstop for Bowling Green and saw a little time at third base.
Dyer praised McDonald.
“BRCC is gaining an excellent athlete with a good attitude and a great work ethic,” Dyer said. “She loves the game. I’m very proud of her and she deserves this. She will be missed here at Bowling Green.”
