Bogalusa 12-year-old Nicolas Miller won first place in the Y12 Saber division of the Baton Rouge Combat Fencing Tournament held April 29. The seventh-grade Annunciation Catholic School student has been training in the sport of fencing for the last 18 months with the New Orleans Fencing Club. The Y12 Saber division is for kids ages 12 and under who fight with the saber sword. Fencing has three sword types — saber, foil and epee. In the last year, Nicolas has won two first-place and two third-place positions in local tournaments around the state. He will continue his journey throughout the summer competing in Louisiana as well as Mississippi competitions.
