LSU’s golf team is headed to the NCAA championships.
The top-seeded Tigers were victorious in the NCAA regionals, which took place Monday through Wednesday at the University Club at LSU.
The Tigers were 2-over-par over the three days for the win.
They were victorious by eight strokes over Duke, as the top five teams advanced to the NCAA championships.
Oregon was 15-over for third, followed by Virginia at 17-over. Jacksonville and Northwestern tied for fifth, as both recorded a 19-over, but Jacksonville won in a sudden-death playoff.
Brandon Pierce posted an 11-over to tie Jacksonville State’s Camilo Aguado, Georgia State’s Nathan Mallonee, Northwestern’s Everton Hawkins and Duke’s Jake Shuman for 39th place in the field of 74.
Pierce has local ties to Bogalusa. His father, Chavgney Pierce, and his grandparents on his father’s side, Huey Pierce and Martha Pierce, are from Bogalusa. His mother, Rebecca Pierce, was an engineer at the Bogalusa paper mill and taught at Bogalusa High School.
LSU’s Sam Burns won the individual title after posting 4-under.
Oregon’s Wyndham Clark was just a stroke behind for second.
LSU’s Luis Gagne, along with Duke teammates Alex Smalley and Chandler Eaton, tied for third, as all three finished at even-par.
The win set a school record for most titles wins in a season with six.
The NCAA tournament begins May 26 at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill.
