Bowling Green School’s football team took to the field and got some good work in against Amite School Center in the spring game Wednesday afternoon at home.
“I was happy. We’ve got small numbers right now. We need to get some more people out, but I think we can move the football,” Bowling Green coach David Currier said. “We’ve got Cam Bell at quarterback back, Logan Leger, Kenny Robertson. Cam Brock is going to be a 10th grader and looks like he’s going to help us out and C.J. Smith. We’ve got a lot of young kids.
“Gunner Peterson, one of our senior offensive linemen, did a good job. Devin Anthony at tight end, Harrison Creel, but again, we’ve got to get into better shape. Of course, we didn’t work on a lot of conditioning during spring.”
Currier said the key would be if his team can hold up for four quarters.
“We’ve got to get a little more saltier on defense,” Currier said.
Currier said the Buccaneers have got work to do, but he is happy with the players he has on his team.
“They’re working and they’re going to get better,” Currier said.
The scrimmage featured a series of plays offensively and defensively with the varsity and junior varsity. Each offense began at its own 40.
In the varsity, which did not include goal-line situations, Bell completed 7-of-16 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Robertson led the receivers with four catches for 93 yards and a score. Leger caught two passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. Anthony had one reception for 13 yards.
The running game was balanced as seven players had at least one carry.
Robertson carried the ball twice for 26 yards and a touchdown. Grady Ball had just one carry, but took it for 30 yards. Bell tallied six attempts for 25 yards. Brock posted three attempts for 14 yards. Smith, Ben Bickham and Leger all had a carry. Smith ran for 2 yards, Bickham for 3 and Leger went for 8.
Defensively, Robertson intercepted a pass.
Bowling Green is playing a jamboree game on Aug. 11. The season opener is set for Aug. 18 against Park Place Christian Academy at home.
