Local teams’ spring football games beginning this week

Football spring games get under way this week and games are scheduled over the next few weeks as teams prepare for the upcoming 2017 regular season.
The spring games are a way for coaching staffs to see how far their teams have come since spring practice has begun, while facing somebody other than their teammates.
The spring games are also an opportunity for fans to get a preview of their what their team looks like at this point in time.
The formats vary for spring games. Some are controlled scrimmages throughout, meaning teams will run a certain amount of plays before switching sides of the ball. Others may just play timed quarters and some may have a little bit of everything.
Two spring games, which combined include three Washington Parish teams, take place today and tomorrow, with one on the east side and one on the west side of the parish.
This afternoon at 2:30 p.m., Bowling Green’s Buccaneers are at home facing Amite School Center. Tomorrow’s game is a match up of two local schools, as Bogalusa is at home taking on Pine at Lewis V. Murray Jr. Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
Two games are on tap Thursday, May 18, and both are set for 6 p.m.
Varnado is scheduled to host Independence and Franklinton is heading to Loranger that day.
The final spring game is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 26, with Ben’s Ford Christian School going against CHEF at home. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Last season, Varnado, Pine and Franklinton reached the playoffs.
Varnado went to the Class 1A quarterfinal round after a 6-3 regular season with the Wildcats capturing the District 8-1A title. Pine reached the second round of the Class 2A postseason after posting a 6-4 record in the regular season. Franklinton split its 10 regular season contests and reached the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
