VHS’s Kemp victorious in high jump

Varnado’s Armontee Kemp was victorious in the high jump and three Wildcats are headed to state in four combined events after their performances at the Region 3-1A Meet that took place Thursday at Woodlawn.
Kemp made it to state in two events. He and JaDarrell Magee advanced to state in the high jump. Kemp won the event after clearing the bar at 6 feet. Magee finished third at 5-6. Kentwood’s Saderian Walls was runner-up with a height of 5-8.
Kemp is also competing at state in the 110-meter hurdles. He was third in the event with a time of 17.90 seconds. East Iberville’s Anthony Davis was victorious in 16.21.
Darien Vargas is headed to state after coming in third during the javelin with a throw of 124-7. Kentwood’s Jacoby White won the event at 145-0.
Thursday’s meet was a chance to advance to state. The top three finishers from each event reached the state meet. The Class 1A meet is May 5 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium. For regionals, athletes had to finish in the top four of their events at their district meet, which was last week.
Quincy James was fourth in a pair of events — the long jump and 400.
James long jumped 19-6. Eddie Brooks was eighth in the event at 17-8. James ran the 400 in 53.79. White Castle’s Marlon Lewis won the long jump at 20-10 and Southern Lab’s Xavier Bell was the 400 winner in 49.06.
Kievs Brooks and Desmond Harry ran fourth and fifth in the 200 with times of 23.83 and 24.94. Kentwood’s Raymontre Palmer was the winner in 21.77.
Travon Stokes and Jacorrius Bickham were fifth and sixth for the 100 with times of 11.46 and 11.82. Palmer won in 10.75.
Magee was sixth in the shot put with a distance of 37-2.5. Derek Cohn won at 44-2.
Rajan Ruffin was eighth in the triple jump at 29-8. East Iberville’s Lyndell Joseph won at 42-1.
Eddie Brooks was eighth for the discus with a throw of 86-1. Kentwood’s Justice Ulschack won at 111-3.
Varnado’s 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams were sixth and seventh respectively. The 4×200 ran a 1:38 while the 4×400 finished in 3:58.
The 4×200 team featured Harry, Bickham, Kemp and Brooks. The 4×400 group had Jarvis James, Magee, Brooks and James.
Southern Lab won both events. They ran the 4×200 in 1:29 and the 4×400 at 3:29.
