Mt. Hermon’s Hughes captures shot put, going to state in 2 events

Mt. Hermon’s Kalei Hughes is headed to the state meet in a pair of events, after qualifying at the Region 3-3B Meet that took place Tuesday at Jennings High School.
Hughes was victorious in the shot put with a distance of 30 feet, 9 inches. Lacassine’s Claire Johnson finished second at 30-7.
Hughes was runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 105-6. Holden’s Kaylee Hughes was the winner at 111-2.
Tuesday’s meet was a state qualifier. The top three finishers from each event will compete at Thursday’s Class B state meet that takes place in LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.
In order to make the regionals, athletes had to be a top-four finisher at their district meet last week.
Mt. Hermon’s Amuriel Williams was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 14.52 seconds and eighth in the 200 at 30.35. Episcopal of Acadiana’s Kailie Williams won the 100 in 13.23 and M.L. King Charter’s Simone Pierre was the 200 winner at 27.25.
Madison Montecino was eighth for the 100-hurdles at 27.50. Lacassine’s Halie Olmstead won in 17.91.
Sikoya Jackson was seventh in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 10.5 inches. Lacassine’s Haley Cooley won at 15-4.5.
Mt. Hermon’s Hughes took eighth in the discus with a throw of 58-7, as Johnson threw 114-2 to win.
The 4×200 relay team ran a 2:08 to finish seventh. The group featured Tiffany Blades, Montecino, Jackson and Williams. M.L. King Charter won in 1:50.
