VHS solid at District 8-1A Meet

Varnado’s Kyle Slocum won the shot put, Armontee Kemp advanced to regionals in two events and the Wildcats captured two relays at the District 8-1A meet that took place Wednesday, April 19, at St. Martin’s Episcopal School.
Slocum was victorious in the shot put with a distance of 38 feet, 3 inches. Ecole Classique’s Nemo Bradley was second at 37-2.
Kemp is moving to regionals in the long jump and 110-meter hurdles.
Kemp was runner up in the long jump at 19-2 and was just two inches from first place, as Ridgewood Prep’s Xavier Soto won with a jump of 19-4.
Kemp was third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 19.95 seconds. Covenant Christian Academy’s Matthew LaJaunie won in 18.41.
Varnado won a pair of relays, the 4×100 and 4×200, and they finished third in the 4×400.
The 4×100 time was 45.90 with Covenant Christian Academy running a 46.32 for second. The 4×200 group ran in 1 minute 36 seconds with Covenant Christian Academy runner up in 1:37. The 4×400 group’s time was 3:59. Covenant Christian Academy won in 3:44.
The 4×100 team featured Jacorrius Bickham, Travon Stokes, Kevis Brooks and Desmond Harry.
The 4×200 team had Bickham, Kemp, Brooks and Harry.
The 4×400 group consisted of Quincy James, JaDarrell Magee, Cameron Allen and Darian Vargas.
The district meet gave athletes the opportunity to qualify for regionals. The top four from each event move on to regionals. The Region 3-3A meet takes place today at Broadmoor High School.
Darien Vargas and Magee were second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Both cleared the bar at 5-2. The tiebreaker is fewest misses, so Vargas got second and Magee was third. Covenant Christian Academy’s Devonte Johnson won the event at 5-4.
Harry and Brooks ran third and fourth in the 200 with times of 24.36 and 24.53. Johnson won the race in 23 seconds.
Stokes and Bickham were third and fourth in the 100 with times of 11.75 and 11.80. Johnson won that race in 11.44.
James was third in the 400 with a time of 55.61. Covenant Christian Academy’s Payton Ross topped the event in 54.55. Magee was sixth in 1 minute 5 seconds.
Nick Blackburn finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 94-4. Covenant Christian Academy’s Devyn won at 137-0.
Jhaquawn McConnell, Jo’Nathan Green and Allen ran sixth, seventh and ninth in the 800 with times of 2:41, 2:47 and 3:06. Covenant Christian Academy’s Owen Pellegrin was the winner in 2:08.
Kevin Boudreaux was fifth in the 1,600 with a 5:42. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Antonio Imbornone won in 4:38.
Covenant Christian won the team competition in lopsided fashion with 166 points, as five teams scored at least one point.
Varnado was second with 67, followed by St. Martin’s Episcopal’s 50, Ridgewood Prep’s 48 and Ecole Classique’s 22.
