- DAILY NEWS PHOTO/Chris Kinkaid Varnado coach Clay Tageant speaks to his team prior to a game earlier this season. The Wildcats have a bye in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs. Franklinton (Class 4A), Pine (2A) and Mt. Hermon (B) are all No. 18 seeds in their classifications.
The LHSAA baseball playoffs are under way and several local teams began play yesterday, with one starting today and another one at a later date.
In Class 1A, the Varnado Wildcats will have to wait to begin its playoff run after going 16-7 this season. That’s because sixth-seeded Varnado earned a bye for the bi-district round and will begin play a single elimination game in the regional round against either No. 11 Kentwood (13-10) or 22nd-seeded Montgomery (6-15).
Franklinton, Pine and Mt. Hermon are all the 18th-seeded teams in their classifications and all three are on the road for their bi-district contests against the No. 15 seeds.
Class 4A Franklinton (12-10) traveled to Minden (16-17) and played after yesterday’s press time. The winner advances to the regionals and faces either second-seeded Beaux Bridge (23-6) or No. 31 Edna Karr (14-9) in a best-of-three series.
In Class 2A, Pine (17-12) went to Bunkie (13-12) and played following yesterday’s press time. The winner plays either second-seeded DeQuincy (23-4) or No. 31 East Feliciana (8-3) in the regionals in a best-of-three series.
Mt. Hermon (12-10) takes to the road this evening to play Doyline (14-17) in the Class B playoffs with first pitch set for 5 p.m. The winner plays No. 2 Quitman (18-8), which has a bye. The regional round in Class B is single elimination.
