William Carey pitcher Devin Smith has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 13-19.
The sophomore hurler, who graduated from Mt. Hermon School in 2015, was the winning pitcher in Friday’s game after allowing two runs on one hit in six innings during a 17-2 victory over Brewton-Parker out of Georgia. Smith tallied eight strikeouts and he walked three.
Smith did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.
This season, Smith has a 5-0 record with a 4.54 ERA in seven games, all of which he started. Smith has allowed 33 hits with 31 strikeouts and 22 walks over 37-2/3 innings.
Smith has been pitching well, of late. Over his last four starts, spanning back to Feb. 24, Smith is 3-0 with a 2.82 ERA. In that time, he has 24 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Smith pitched in the opener of the three-game series, which the Crusaders swept wins of 19-3 and 13-0 on Saturday.
On Wednesday, William Carey lost to the University of West Alabama, 7-2.
The Crusaders are 22-6 this season. William Carey is ranked No. 9 in NAIA.
This weekend, they are hosting the University of Mobile today and tomorrow.
Because of weather concerns, the teams are playing a doubleheader today beginning at noon. Saturday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m., but that time could change because of weather. If Saturday is rained out, the teams will play Sunday at 1 p.m.
