Varnado’s Stokes is a state champion

Varnado’s Travon Stokes had a huge day at the Division V Powerlifting State Meet at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Friday.
The senior captured the state championship in the 165-pound weight class and took home the top lifter award for the 114-165-pound weight classes.
Stokes lifted a combined weight of 1,200 pounds. He squatted 435, benched 315 and deadlifted 450.
Episcopal’s Leo Franques was second at 1,170.
Varnado’s Chris Kimble was third in the 148s with a 985. He had a 355 squat, 225 bench and 405 deadlift.
Delhi’s Dashun Island was the state champion with a 1,005. He tied Ascension Catholic’s John Broussard for the lead. The tiebreaker is body weight. Island weighs 146.7 pounds, while Brossard is at 147, so Island is the champ.
Andre Jones finished fourth in the state in the 220s. Jones tallied a 1,040 total with a 315 squat, 280 bench and 445 deadlift.
Catholic High School of Point Coupee’s Mason Riche won with a total of 1,360.
Delhi’s Jonathan Fountain was the top lifter for the 181-super heavyweight classes.
Delhi Charter captured the team state championship for Division V with 44 points. Delhi was second with 31 and Ascension Catholic was third after posting 30 points, as 13 teams put up at least one point.
Varnado tied Ascension Episcopal for sixth place with 12 points.
