COVINGTON — Franklinton held on to capture the completion of a suspended game Friday, 10-6, over St. Scholastica at the SSA Athletic Complex.
The game was originally scheduled for March 7, but after the teams were able to play through a couple of light showers, the heavy rains came prior to the bottom of the third and forced the game to be suspended with the Lady Demons leading, 7-1.
The action resumed Friday from that point, but on a much clearer day, and the Doves trimmed the lead to 7-3.
Jordan Bass reached on a bunt single with one out and advanced to second on Jenna Ollie’s sacrifice bunt. Samantha Drouant singled home Bass, and after a walk to Stephanie Melancon, Arden Perry recorded an RBI single, plating Drouant to make it a four-run game.
Franklinton got the two runs back in the fourth.
Bethany Sandifer walked and then Ashlyn Ard singled. Both moved up on a passed ball and scored when Morgan Stafford doubled over the right fielder’s head and it was back to a six-run game at 9-3.
St. Scholastica had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth, but failed to score after a strikeout and a lineout.
Franklinton added a run in the fifth.
Madison LaSalle and Bailey Spears both singled. LaSalle was caught stealing third, and later in the inning, Sandifer singled home Spears and the lead was 10-3.
“A 7-1 lead in the rainout and to go ahead and jump out to that 10-3 lead, hopefully we can just build on this from now on,” Franklinton coach Leslie McGhee said. “I think our district as whole, it’s anybody’s game, so we’ve got to keep building. Let this momentum of the win keep going our way.”
The Doves came back and made things exciting.
With one out in the sixth, Riley De Laval and Cecilia Hunter singled and Savannah Frieman walked to load the bases with one out. Bass then hit a two-run single to left, plating De Laval and Hunter to make it 10-5 through six.
The Doves added another run in the seventh. Perry hit an infield single with one out that was followed by a walk to Anna Champ and an RBI double by De Laval that sent Perry home.
After a pop out to first, the rally continued when Frieman walked to load the bases. That brought the potential tying run to the plate and the game ended in an exciting fashion. The ball was hit to right centerfield. Centerfielder Spears and right fielder Stafford both went for it. There was a slight collision. Both players hit the ground, but both were OK and Stafford made the catch to end the rally and the game.
Franklinton posted 15 hits.
Ard went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored.
LaSalle, Spears, Stafford and Caroline Branch all tallied two hits.
