COVINGTON — Franklinton and St. Scholastica Academy were able to play through a couple of scattered showers, but then the skies opened up with a heavy downpour and caused the game to be suspended at the St. Scholastica Academy Athletic Complex.
Franklinton jumped out to a 7-1 lead with three runs in each of the first two innings and another in the third.
The Lady Demons began their first-inning rally with one out when Bailey Spears walked. Bethany Sandifer reached on an error and Ashlyn Ard doubled home Spears and Sandifer to make it 2-0. Later in the frame, Alaina Fussell doubled, plating Morgan Stafford, who grounded into a fielder’s choice earlier.
The Doves responded with one in the bottom of the inning. Riley De Laval singled and later scored on Jenna Ollie’s RBI groundout to make it a 3-1 game.
Franklinton increased its lead to 6-1 with three more runs in the second.
Caroline Branch singled to lead off and advanced to second on Madison LaSalle’s groundout to second. Spears reached on an infield single that was deep in the hole at shortstop, sending Branch to third. Sandifer sent both runners home with a two-run double to left for a 5-1 lead. Sandifer later scored on an RBI double to the left centerfield gap by Safford.
Franklinton started its third-inning rally with two outs when Branch doubled to right field. She scored after LaSalle reached on an error.
While Franklinton was warming up prior to the start of the bottom of the third, the heavy rains came, forcing the game to be suspended.
The teams will finish out the contest on Friday, March 17, at 3:30 p.m. and it will pick up where they left off.
Franklinton will be up 7-1 and St. Scholastica Academy will open the bottom of the third at the plate.
At this point, Branch is 2-for-3 with two runs scored. LaSalle, Spears, Sandifer, Ard, Stafford and Fussell all have a hit. LaSalle has an RBI while Spears is at two runs scored. Sandifer will begin with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored to go with a double while Ard has a double and two RBIs, Stafford has a double an RBI and a run and Ard has driven one in.
Anna Miley has thrown two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout and three walks.
