Several local powerlifers qualify for state

Ten local powerlifters have a chance to capture a state title after qualifying for the state meet at the South Regional Championship that took place at Pope John Paul II on Feb. 25.
Franklinton and Varnado are the Washington Parish teams that are competing in powerlifting.
Franklinton, which competes in Division II, had six qualify.
In the boys, Stevie Thompson, Joe Magee, Josh Gubert, Alex Kennedy and Josh Brewster all made it to state.
Thompson reached the state meet in the 165-pound weight class with a 355 squat, 225 bench press and 355 deadlift for a 935 total.
Magee and Gubert are headed to state in the 242s.
Magee tallied a 460 squat, 260 bench and 405 deadlift for 1,125 total. Gubert posted a 440 squat, 225 bench and 405 deadlift for 1,070 total.
Kennedy and Brewster made it in the 275s.
Kennedy’s combined for a 990 with a 325 squat, 260 bench and 405 deadlift. Brewster advanced to state with a 405 squat, 190 bench and 380 deadlift for a 975.
In the girls, Alexa Barber is going to the state meet.
She made it in the 165s. Barber squatted 215, benched 105 and deadlifted 220 for a 540 total.
Varnado, which is in Division V, saw all four of its lifters reach state.
Chris Kimble is in the 148s. He went for an 895 total with a 335 squat, 180 bench and he deadlifted 380.
Travon Stokes and Darien Vargas made it in the 165s. Stokes squatted 405, benched 295 and deadlifted 450 for 1,150 total. Vargas posted a 255 squat, 195 bench and 375 deadlift.
Andre Jones reached state in the 220s. He squatted 315, benched 275 and deadlifted 410 for 1,000 total.
Varnado competes at the Division V state tournament on Friday, March 17. Franklinton competes in the Division II state tourney on Saturday, March 18. Both are at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
