Mt. Hermon School’s Gerald Bunch had a huge game that helped the Yellow Jackets advance to the quarterfinals with a 74-70 overtime victory over No. 7 Negreet in the regional round of the Class B state playoffs at home Feb. 28.
“The kids did a good job,” Mt. Hermon coach B. Alford said. “They got the ball where they needed to get it. They got it to Gerald (Bunch) inside a lot, especially in overtime. He had nine points in overtime.
“Negreet had a kid, (Brian) Brown. He had 36 (points). I had heard he’s one of the best players in the state and he lived up to his billing.”
Bunch scored 30 points to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring.
He was one of three Mt. Hermon players to hit double figures. Ike Tate recorded 14 points and George Smith had 10.
Jordan Smith and Device Taylor posted nine points each and Dwayne Elzey added two points for Mt. Hermon.
Negreet was the second straight top 10-seeded team that 23rd-seeded Mt. Hermon has faced in the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets opened the postseason with a 42-40 win over No. 10 Pitkin.
Negreet finished the season with a 21-12 record.
