Several local girls’ LHSAA teams reach basketball playoffs

Girls basketball playoffs take center court this week, as the postseason tips off this week for schools in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
Four Washington Parish girls’ basketball teams made the postseason, including Franklinton, Pine, Varnado and Mt. Hermon.
Pine, Varnado and Mt. Hermon will play Thursday, Feb. 16 while Franklinton’s game is Friday. All four teams are on the road.
The Lady Demons (13-16) reached the Class 4A postseason as the 31st seed and will travel to second-seeded DeRidder (27-6) at 6 p.m. Friday. DeRidder reached the second round of the playoffs last year.
The winner of Friday’s game will play either No. 15 South Terrebonne or 18th-seeded Edna Karr.
In Class 2A, Pine (15-14) is the 21st-seeded team and the Lady Raiders are headed to Ferriday (17-9), with the game getting underway at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Pine made the opening round of the postseason last year.
The winner of tomorrow’s contest faces either fifth-seeded Red River or No. 28 General Trass.
In Class 1A, Varnado (3-22) is on the road, facing second-seeded Merryville (24-2) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Last season, Varnado reached the first round of the playoffs while Merryville was last year’s state runner-up in Class 1A.
The winner will play either No. 15 East Beauregard or No. 18 Oberlin.
In Class B, Mt. Hermon (4-17), the 24th-seeded team, takes to the road to play ninth-seeded Lacassine (16-16) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Mt. Hermon reached the first round of the playoffs last season while Lacassine was a state semifinalist.
The winner will face either eighth-seeded Hathaway or No. 25 Quitman.
