Four local players and another with local ties were named all-state players by the Louisiana Football Coaches Association.
Varnado’s Andre Jones, Damon Kirsh and Darian Vargas, along with Pine’s Chris Gordon and West Monroe’s John Bailey Gullatt, were all named all state by the LFCA.
In Class 1A, Jones made first team at defensive lineman.
This season, Jones, who signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Wednesday, made 55 tackles and six sacks to go with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.
Kirsh is a second-team linebacker and Vargas is a second-team punter.
Kirsh recorded 106 stops and eight sacks. Kirsh forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, scored a defensive touchdown and returned a kick for a score.
The three were part of District 8-1A Champion Wildcats, who reached the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. Varnado ended up losing to eventual state champion and No. 2 seeded Logansport, 50-14. The Wildcats tallied an 8-4 record.
Gordon made second team for Class 2A at defensive back.
This season, Gordon made 85 tackles and intercepted two passes.
Gordon was part of a Pine team that reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to fifth-seeded and quarterfinalist Kinder, 51-0. Pine went 7-4.
Switching to Class 5A, Gullatt is a first-team linebacker and he made the composite first-team as well.
Gullatt has a local connection. His grandfather Ricky Branch is a former basketball coach at Pine and his mother Angela Gullatt is a former Pine basketball player.
This season, West Monroe reached the Class 5A state championship game, but lost to Landry-Walker, 50-21. West Monroe finished with a 12-2-1 record.
