Children ages 5-14 took the opportunity to showcase their basketball skills and learn new ways about how to improve at the game during the Lumberjack All-Star Basketball Mini Clinic that took place Saturday in Bogalusa High School’s gym.
“It’s a great opportunity for us at Bogalusa High School to give back to the community and let the kids know that we’re involved with the community,” Bogalusa basketball coach Ken Matthews said.
Matthews also said they were teaching the campers things like discipline, basketball skills and the way of life.
“The way to treat people, especially,” Matthews said.
Some of the things the campers learned were layups, right hand and left hand dribble, and passing the ball skills.
Matthews said they were also teaching them the discipline aspect of basketball.
“The leadership skills part of it,” Matthews said. “A lot of times, people think it’s just shooting and running up-and-down the court, but it’s the thought process. You’ve got to teach kids that at a young age.”
The four-hour camp featured 21 participants and a few people helped Matthews with the clinic.
