Bowling Green tallies 1-1 record at Columbia Tournament this week

Bowling Green’s girls split its two games in the Columbia Academy Christmas Invitational Tournament that took place Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The Lady Bucs won the first game, 60-41, over North Pike on Tuesday.

Bowling Green got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 17-2 lead early in the first quarter, and ending the quarter with a 22-4 lead.

North Pike rebounded at the outset of the second quarter, as they began the period on an 8-3 run to trim the score to 25-12.

Bowling Green increased the lead back to 31-15 by halftime.

North Pike got the deficit to 13 twice in the second half — both times were in the third quarter — but could get no closer, as the Lady Bucs went on for the 19-point victory.

McKinley Seal and Hollie Waskom combined to score more than half of Bowling Green’s points, as both players had a big scoring contest.

Seal led the way with 18 points on 7-of-13 from the floor, which included a 3-pointer. She also dished out four assists while grabbing a rebound and making three steals.

Waskom converted seven of her nine shots and two of her three 3-pointers on her way to a 17-point afternoon. She also passed for three assists and recorded a steal.

Shelby McDonald tallied six points that included a 3-pointer, to go with two boards, an assist and a steal.

Hallie Robertson posted five points, which included a 3-pointer, two rebounds and an assist.

Katelin Junkins and Cailee Fruge had four points each. Junkins recorded seven rebounds, three assists and a block. Fruge grabbed six rebounds and had an assist and a steal.

Anna Beninato, Sydney Watson and Mason Edwards scored two points each. Watson pulled down a pair of rebounds, dished out an assist and made a steal. Edwards had a steal.

The next game was a 52-46 loss to East Rankin Academy on Thursday.

Bowling Green trailed 13-9 after the first quarter, but East Rankin extended the lead to 27-15 by halftime.

The second half went better for the Lady Bucs, who won both quarters and outscored East Rankin 31-25 over the final two periods, but came up short in the 52-46 setback.

Hollie Waskom put up a solid double-double. She scored a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 from the floor and she had a led the Lady Bucs with 13 rebounds. Waskom also dished out an assist and made three steals. Waskom also hit three of her four 3-pointers and was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

McKinley Seal put up 10 points and missed a double-double by just one rebound, as she finished with nine. Like Waskom, she was 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Seal also had three assists and a steal.

Shelby McDonald recorded nine points and connected on a pair of threes. McDonald also grabbed two rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and made two steals.

Sydney Watson and Cailee Fruge put up five each. Watson was 2-for-4 from the field and hit a 3-pointer. She also made a steal. Fruge pulled down four rebounds, passed for two assists and posted three steals.
