COVINGTON — Pine’s Lady Raiders posted a 1-2 record in the SSA Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament that took place Monday, Nov. 21, and Tuesday, Nov. 22, at St. Scholastica Academy.

The Lady Raiders began the tournament by defeating Pope John Paul II, 37-25.

Breyanna Brown led Pine with 17 points.

Hannah Ard scored seven points while McKayla Jordan tallied six, Treyanna Williams had four, Bethany McGinnis posted two and Destiny Allman added one.

The next game was a 40-31 loss to Northlake Christian School.

Pine led early on and took an 11-9 lead with 21 seconds left in the first quarter when Brown passed to Savannah Kennedy for a bucket to break a 9-9 tie.

The Lady Raiders led 11-9 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was essentially the key to the game, as Northlake Christian outscored Pine, 11-2.

The Lady Wolverines began with the period’s opening six points — all by Kyren Whittington, who scored a game-high 22 points.

Whittington gave Northlake Christian the lead when she made a steal, hit the bucket, got fouled and converted the and-one opportunity to make it 12-11 with 4:11 left in the first half. She hit a jumper with 3:35 left and then a free throw just 18 seconds later and the Lady Wolverines were out in front 15-11.

Pine stopped the run when Jordan, who had three points, hit a layup to trim the lead to two at the 2:45 mark.

But the Lady Wolverines tallied the final five points of the half.

Natalie Newberry, who finished with eight points, hit a follow-up shot after grabbing an offensive rebound and KeraGrace Watts nailed a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left. Northlake Christian led 20-13 at halftime.

Pine pulled within five at 20-15 just 1:07 into the second half when Brown passed to Ard for two, but the Lady Wolverines pushed the lead back to 25-15 with 4:30 on the clock.

The Lady Wolverines’ biggest lead in third quarter was 12 points, which happened a couple of times. It was 35-23 through three. They led by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter at 38-25 with 4:36 left.

Pine trimmed it to 38-28, but NCS made it 40-28 and Pine got it back to 40-30 with 2:43 left, but never could make that key run in the 40-31 loss.

Brown led Pine with 13 points.

Ard tallied six points while Kennedy finished with five and Kaylyn Ginn and Kelsey Jenkins posted two each.

Northlake Christian’s Watts had eight points and Kaitlyn Walker added two.

The Lady Raiders’ final game of the tournament was a 37-29 setback to the host school Tuesday.

Brown led Pine with 10 points.

McGinnis recorded eight while Kennedy posted three and Ginn, Williams, Jenkins and Karley Voth had two apiece.
