Five BG softball players get to first team

Five Bowling Green School softball players were selected to the District 5AAA first team and five others were named second-team players.

Pitcher Cailee Fruge, shortstop Shelby McDonald, centerfielder McKinley Seal, second baseman Breanna Tobey and third baseman Hollie Waskom were named to the first team.

Fruge had a 2.63 ERA during the regular season, with 45 strikeouts and 19 walks over 61 innings.

Fruge was also solid at the plate, recording a .421 batting average to go with a .522 on-base percentage and a .737 slugging percentage. She homered three times, drove in 17, scored nine runs and had a trio of doubles over 14 games.

McDonald batted .310 with a .383 on-base percentage and a .452 slugging percentage. She finished with two doubles, two triples, three RBIs and 11 runs scored. McDonald struck out just four times in 47 plate appearances.

Seal put up a .390 batting average and reached base at a .500 clip, while slugging .488. Seal doubled four times, drove in six and scored 15 runs. Seal struck out only three times in 50 plate appearances.

Tobey had a .333 batting average with a .417 on-base percentage and a .548 slugging percentage.

Tobey doubled three times, tripled three times, had 12 RBIs and scored nine runs. Tobey struck out just once over 50 plate appearances.

Waskom recorded a .281 batting average, .425 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage. Waskom homered once and drove in eight runs. She also had two doubles and a triple along with nine runs scored. She struck out just twice in 41 plate appearances.

Bowling Green’s second-team players are Kaitlin Junkins, Mason Edwards, Jadyn Jenkins, Landry Dupont and Madelyn Burch.

Junkins was a .333 hitter. She had a .366 on-base percentage and a .462 slugging percentage. Junkins doubled once, triple twice, drove in four runs and scored 13 runs.

Edwards reached base at a .308 clip. She drove in four runs and scored seven times. Jenkins had a .304 on-base percentage with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Dupont hit .320 with a .393 on-base percentage and .480 slugging. She finished with two doubles and a triple, to go with 10 RBIs and nine runs scored.

Burch, who is a pitcher, had a 2.83 ERA with 11 strikeouts and two walks in 12-1/3 innings, which included four games and two starts. This year, Bowling Green missed getting to the championship game in the South State AAA and Class AAA tournaments by one game.

They lost to South State runner-up Adams County Christian School, 8-7, and they lost to eventual Class AAA champion Silliman Institute, 5-0, in elimination games of those tournaments.
