Pine and Varnado advanced in the LHSAA state playoffs Friday night, and both will play in the second round this Friday at 7 p.m.

No. 12 Pine was victorious over 21st-seeded Jonesboro-Hodge in a 15-14 thriller at home.

It was Pine’s second ever football home playoff game and the Raiders have won both postseason contests they’ve hosted. The first was a 28-20 win in 2014 against St. Helena College & Career Academy.

This week, Pine continues in the Class 2A playoffs and is taking to the road to face fifth-seeded Kinder, who has won the Class 2A state title in two of the past three seasons, and was state runner-up in 2014. Kinder defeated No. 28 Jeanette, 55-8, last week.

After Pine won its first-ever playoff game in 2014, the Raiders played Kinder in the second round and Kinder won, 37-6.

Seventh-seeded Varnado was victorious over No. 26 Ringgold, 44-8, last week to open the Class 1A playoffs. The Wildcats have reached the second round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

This week, the Wildcats stay at home and play 10th-seeded Elton.

Elton was a 38-34 winner over No. 23 LaSalle last week.

Elton has made the second round of the Class 1A playoffs each of the last three years.
