Varnado’s Wildcats are at home tonight for the first time in more than a month, as they play against the St. Martin’s Episcopal Saints in a District 8-1A competition.

This is the Wildcats’ first home game since Sept. 23, when they defeated Catholic of Pointe Coupee, 34-12.

“The thing about it is that St. Martin’s is still in the hunt for the district championship,” Varnado coach Scott Shaffett said. “They’re coming here to win a district championship. We’ve got to step and play. There’s a lot on the line. When you’ve got something big to play for, you’ve got to step up and play. You can’t have a letdown.”

Varnado enters this week with a 4-3 overall record and 2-0 district mark.

Last week, the Wildcats defeated Ridgewood, 46-0.

Varnado is No. 7 in the unofficial LHSAA Class 1A power ratings.

Last week, Desmond Harry had 81 yards on just two carries for Varnado. Jadarrell Magee recorded 52 yards on three attempts and a touchdown. James Williams had two carries for 25 yards and a touchdown.

JoNathan Green scored a defensive touchdown on a stripped ball.

Varnado won last year’s game, 44-12.

The Saints begin the week at 3-5 overall and 2-1 in district. St. Martin’s suffered a 31-0 loss to Covenant Christian Academy last week.

The Saints are No. 15 in the unofficial LHSAA Division IV power ratings.
