Pine jumped out to a two-possession lead and never looked back in a 33-12 victory over Independence on the road Friday night.
The Raiders (3-0) led 14-0 after the first quarter and maintained that lead at 20-6 through halftime.
Pine’s lead was trimmed to 20-12 after three quarters, but the Raiders outscored Independence 13-0 in the fourth quarter to cap off the 33-12 victory.
“It’s a real big win,” Pine coach Bradley Seal said. “We’re 3-0 to start. We talked all year about getting off to a fast start and so far, we’ve done that.”
Jakyran Handy turned in another strong performance. The junior ran for 90 yards and added three touchdowns to his total for the season on runs of 5, 7 and 2 yards. This season, Handy has 359 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns. He also has a receiving touchdown.
Joey Seal had a 1-yard rushing touchdown and he threw for another to Chris Gordon for 22 yards.
Seal finished with 68 yards passing, all to Gordon. He also ran for 15 yards.
Delvric Dillon put up 35 yards on the ground.
“Delvric Dillon had some tough runs during the game at key moments,” Seal said. “He’s playing really well.”
Jarwin Jordan finished with 30 rushing yards.
Defensively, Colby Powell, Donovan Kreyssig, Brendon Kelley and Tate Roach all had a sack. Kelley also blocked a punt. Rion Terrell intercepted two passes and Jordan recovered a fumble.
Pine attempts to reach the 4-0 mark Friday, as the Raiders are back home to open District 7-2A play against St. Helena College & Career Academy. St. Helena is 3-0 this season. They have not allowed a point in the two games they played. The opener was a forfeit win over Amite.
