Ben’s Ford battles Prentiss Christian in road scrimmage

Ben’s Ford Christian School continued to prepare for the season Friday, with a scrimmage at Prentiss Christian School.

The teams ran sets of 10 plays before the ball changed possession.

The Eagles’ first-year coach Robert N. Cook said the team did well, but still needs a lot of work.

“We’re not where we need to be,” Cook said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement at every position.”

Cook said the defense played well in Friday’s competition.

“The defense was very aggressive,” Cook said. “There were just a few times where we missed assignments. Had we done our assignments, we would’ve been in position to make those plays. If I had to give a grade, I’d give it a B-plus.”

Cook said he couldn’t give enough accolades to his defense.

Safety Justin Stewart intercepted a pass. Linebackers Andrew Smith, Tyler Winstead, Cameron Miller and C.J. McClelland all recorded a sack.

Cook also said that lineman Chad New, safety Cameron Byrd and cornerback Justin Moore all played well.

Cook said his players are behind in learning the offense right now, which is understandable.

“The kids are learning a new offense, but it’s coming along,” Cook said. “We’re still evaluating where kids are going to play position wise. I’d give our offense a C, but we’ve got to be better than average. There are too many good teams in this league.”

Cook said he was happy with the play of his quarterbacks Jeremiah Slocum, Winstead and Miller. Cook said selecting a starter will be a tough decision and that it will probably come down to situational football.

He also said that the line played well.

Robert Gaitan caught a pass from Miller and went the distance on about a 50-yard catch-and-run.

The Eagles will play in the final game of the Ben’s Ford Christian School jamboree, which takes place Friday. The event is three games. Ben’s Ford is scheduled to play against New Orleans Home School, with action set to begin at 8 p.m.
