YMCA church league deadline coming up

The YMCA on Avenue B is putting a church basketball league together and the deadline to register is coming up.

“It’s been 25-30 years since we’ve had a good church league going here for basketball,” YMCA Chief Volunteer Officer Stuart Parker said. “We’re hoping to get these guys out, have the competitiveness and the enjoyment of playing basketball. We’re hoping to get a routine going with basketball leagues here. Hopefully this will be the start of something good.”

The cost to join is $40 per person and it’s open to participants age 20 and older. Squads must have at least eight people and the deadline has been extended Friday, July 22. The league should be limited to six teams.

Parker said Friday morning that they have one team officially registered and another one in the process of signing up.

He said they’d like to begin the league around August.

“I’m really excited because this has been a long time coming,” Parker said. “Hopefully the guys come out and play. It’s a great game and the atmosphere is good because it’s in the YMCA, which is a Christian organization. It promotes sportsmanship and competitiveness.”

Parker said once this league gets going, he’s hoping it will open the door to developing a youth basketball league.

Anyone interested in sponsoring teams or joining the church league should call Ben Godwin at 985-570-3129 or Michael Keen at 985-516-4455.
