Franklinton’s Wyatt Verret is part of a Louisiana Knights travel ball team that is heading to Bradenton, Fla., to compete in the 2016 Under Armour Classic at the IMG Academy this weekend.

The 16U tournament, which takes place from Friday through Sunday, features 11 teams from various parts of the United States and one more from Canada for 12 total. Each team will feature rosters of 2018-19 prospects.

One of the Knights coaches, Chris Pool, said the group they’re taking there includes some of the Knights’ top players in their 16U program.

Pool said Verret, who will be a sophomore this coming school year, is a tough, scrappy baseball player.

“He’s the kind of player you want to have on your team,” Pool said. “At the end of the day, his toughness stands out in the way he plays the game.”

Pool also said that Verret is developing well as a player.

“He’s very competitive,” Pool said. “When he matches up against older guys, he succeeds. He’s got a great work ethic.”

This season, Verret mainly played second base and he also pitched. Offensively, he began hitting second about five or six games into the season.

Verret was a second-team all-district player this year for the Demons.
