Spring football games began yesterday, more are next week

The spring football season is currently underway, as teams prepare for their fall campaigns.

Spring games for schools in Washington Parish began last night and continue next week.

Last night, Bowling Green hosted Ben’s Ford Christian School in MAIS action.

Bowling Green is coming off a playoff year, as the team posted a 6-4 record. The Buccaneers lost in the opening round of the Class AAA playoffs to Cathedral Unit School, 35-12.

Ben’s Ford struggled last season, going 1-9. The win was against eventual 2015 Class A-AA champion Wilkinson County Christian Academy.

The four LHSAA football teams will be playing next week over a three-day time frame.

On Thursday, Varnado takes to the road to face Independence at 6 p.m. The Wildcats enter this season following a year when they went to the regional round of the playoffs. Varnado lost to eventual state runner-up Haynesville, 61-20.

Two local teams are playing Friday, May 13.

Bogalusa takes to the road and heads to Northshore in Slidell to face the Panthers at 5:30 p.m.

The Lumberjacks captured the District 7-3A title and reached the quarterfinal round of the postseason before falling to Amite, 56-20, capping off a 7-6 season.

Pine is at home, facing Jewel Sumner. That game also begins at 5:30 p.m.

The Raiders struggled last season, finishing 2-7.

Midday Saturday, Franklinton is on the road against Hammond. That game is set for noon.

The Demons had another solid year, as they captured the District 8-4A Title and posted a 10-4 record.

Their season concluded with a 34-21 loss to eventual state runner-up Edna Karr in the semifinal round of the playoffs.
