FHS’s Ginn headed to state in golf

Franklinton’s Zach Ginn qualified for the state golf meet in Monday’s Division II Region II at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild.

Ginn posted an 82 to advance.

The top four teams and the top four individuals, who are not on one of the top four teams advance to the state meet, which is at the Wetlands in Lafayette on Monday and Tuesday.

Ginn was third among the four individuals who qualified.

Loranger’s Kristofer Kerr led the group with a 72. South Lafourche’s Kyle Estay was second with an 81 and West Feliciana’s Mills McClendon took fourth with an 83.

The team competition was close as far as qualifying. Teurlings Catholic won the event with a 309 in the field of eight.

E.D. White was second at 316, followed Vandebilt Catholic’s 337 and Assumption’s 373.

Brusly was fifth at 374 and Franklinton shot a 382 for sixth.

The top four golfers are used to determine team scores.

Besides Ginn, Brett Bryant posted a 98, Cameron Gatewood had a 99, DIllen Reeves recorded a 103 and Cort McCullough had a 121.

Two Lady Demons competed in the Division I Region II.

Faith Chauvin carded a 101 to tie St. Scholastica Academy’s Beverly Brown for 17th. Hannah Grace Henn posted a 112 and tied Dominican’s Meghan Sub for 28th.

The individual qualifiers for state were East Iberville’s Julie Johnson, Catholic of New Iberia’s Shrayon Thibodeaux, Holy Savior Menard’s Madison Bates and Metairie Park Country Day’s Madeline Gordon.

Johnson posted a 64 and won the regional. Thibodeaux and Bates tied for fourth with an 83 and Gordon was just a stroke behind and tied Academy of Sacred Heart’s Cassidy Lambert for sixth overall.

The team qualifiers are Academy of Sacred Heart, Archbishop Hannan, University High and Episcopal of Baton Rouge.

Academy of Sacred Heart won the event with a 172.

Hannan was second with a 176, followed by University High’s 178 and Episcopal of Baton Rouge’s 184.

The top two golfers from each team were used to determine team scores.
