Varnado’s Kemp, Wildcats’ 4×100 relay team qualify for state meet

Varnado’s Armontee Kemp along with the Wildcats’ 4×100 relay team qualified for state during the Region 3-1A Meet held at Ponchatoula on Monday.

Kemp made it to the state meet in the long jump. Kemp finished third with a distance of 20 feet, 4.5 inches. Ascension Catholic’s Kebori Hunter, the Field MVP, won the event at 20-9.5.

Varnado’s 4×100 relay team also advanced to the state meet with a third-place finish. The group ran the event in 46.24 seconds. The team featured Jacorrius Bickham, Travon Stokes, Kevis Brooks and Desmond Harry.

Southern Lab won the race in 43.27 seconds.

Monday’s meet gave participants a chance to advance to state. The top three finishers in each event continue their season at the state meet, which takes place Friday, May 6 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Several others competed for Varnado.

Stokes (11.41) and Bickham (11.93) ran fourth and seventh in the 100-meters, as Kentwood’s Raymontre Palmer won at 10.99.

Brooks (24.93) and Harry (25.81) were sixth and seventh for the 200. Kentwood’s Tyrone Brumfield won in 22.24.

Quincy James finished fifth in the 400 (54.95), as Southern Lab’s Xavier Bell bested the event with a time of 48.79.

Kemp posted a fourth-place finish in the 110-hurdles (17.61). Southern Lab’s Tenoa Alex topped the event in 14.92.

Varnado’s 4×200 relay team (1:36) was fourth while the 4×400 group (4 minutes) was seventh. The 4×200 squad included Kemp, Brooks, Bickham and Harry. The 4×400 team had James, JaDarrell Magee, Cameron Allen and Jo’Nathan Green.

Kentwood won the 4×200 (1:29) while Southern Lab captured the 4×400 (3:33).

In the high jump, Magee (5-0) and Darian Vargas (5-0) were sixth and eighth (5-0), as Hunter won at 5-10.

The tiebreaker is fewest trials and then fewest misses.

Kyle Slocum was fifth in the shot put, as Southern Lab’s Deion Rainey won at 49-2.75.

Nick Blackburn was seventh for the discus at 97-9. Covenant Christian Academy’s Devyn Allen won at 137-6.

The boys’ Track MVP was Antonio Imbornone.

Varnado finished eighth in the team competition with 30 points.

Southern Lab won the meet with 113, as 12 teams scored at least one point.

Kemtwood (88) and Ascension Catholic tied for second, followed by Covenant Christian Academy (83) and White Castle (40) rounded out the top five.
