Several Varnado girls advance to state in track

Several Varnado athletes qualified for the state meet Monday in the Region 3-1A Meet at Ponchatoula.

Jaden Foster, Quierra Bickham, Ke’arria Green and Yienna Kemp are going to state.

Foster made it in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.75 seconds in a close race. She finished just two one-hundredths of a second out of first. St. John’s Annie McLin won the event in 17.73.

Quierra Bickham advanced with a second-place tally in the long jump. Her distance was 15 feet, 11.5 inches. Kentwood’s Lakirsta Johnson, the Field MVP, won the event at 16-8.

Green is moving on for the shot put. She was third at 28-9.5. Ascension Catholic’s Kenshell Davis won with a distance of 33-8.25.

Kemp took second for the javelin. She recorded a 91-3. Ascension Catholic’s Carson Hitzman won at 110-7.

Monday’s meet was a qualifier. The top three finishers from each event advanced to the state meet, which is Friday, May 6 at Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU.

Several others competed for Varnado. Tyisha Newkirk was seventh in the 100 (13.98). White Castle’s Ariel Bell won in 11.92.

Bell was one of three people, who shared Track MVP honors. The others were Ascension Catholic teammates Sophie Daigle and Maerys Joseph.

Varnado’s Destiny Keys took seventh for the 400 (1:16), as Joseph won in 1:01.

Foster was sixth in the long jump (13-11).

TyQuasia Allen was seventh in the javelin (63-4) and eighth in the shot put (24-3.5).

Varnado finished eighth in the team competition with 31 points.

Ascension Catholic won in lopsided fashion with 127 points, as 11 teams scored at least one point.

Covenant Christian Academy (72), White Castle and Kentwood all tied for second and St. John (58) rounded out the top five.
