Bogalusa police have one man in custody following a murder Tuesday night.

Police Chief Joe Culpepper said Steven Rodgers, 26, allegedly shot and killed Wendy Hayes, 35, in a home in the 800 block of Avenue B.

Culpepper said Rodgers turned himself in Wednesday and has confessed to the murder.

Rodgers is being charged with second-degree murder, felon in possession of a gun and dangerous use of a weapon. Culpepper noted that Rodgers and Hayes were not married, but the two had a prior relationship.

“This was a domestic homicide,” said Culpepper. “As best as we could tell now it’s not drug related.”

Culpepper said he didn’t know what prompted the murder.

“I’m going to assume they had an argument of some kind. I don’t know what it was about,” he said.

This is the first murder in Bogalusa in 2016.

The chief said officers arrived at the house at 11:30 p.m. after neighbors reported shots fired. When police entered the residence, Culpepper said officers found Hayes unresponsive but alive. She later died at the hospital.

The St. Tammany Parish coroner will perform an autopsy on Hayes’ body.

Culpepper praised the officers who investigated the scene.

“I think it’s a great job and a very timely arrest,” he said.
