Varnado’s Slocum captures shot put in district meet

Varnado’s Kyle Slocum was victorious in the shot put and two of the Wildcats’ relay teams won at the District 8-1A meet held Wednesday at St. Martin’s Episcopal.

Slocum recorded a distance of 38 feet, 3 inches, in the shot put to win.

Varnado won two of the three relays. The Wildcats bested the 4×100 in 45.90 seconds and the 4×200 at 1:36. The 4×400 team ran a 3:59 to take third, as Covenant Christian Academy won that event in 3:44.

The 4×100 team featured Travon Stokes, Desmond Harry, Kevis Brooks and Jacorrius Bickham. The 4×200 group had Harry, Brooks, Bickham and Armontee Kemp. The 4×400 team consisted of Quincy James, Jadarrell Magee, Cameron Allen and Darius Vargas.

Wednesday’s meet was a qualifying meet. The top four finishers from each event move into the Region 3-1A meet, which takes place Monday, April 25 at Ponchatoula.

Kemp advanced to regionals by finishing second in the long jump (19-2) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (19.95). Ridgewood Prep’s Xavier Soto won the long jump at 19-4 and Covenant Christian’s Matthew LaJaunie was best in the 110 at 18.41.

Vargas (5-2) and Magee (5-2) were second and third respectively in the high jump, as Covenant Christian’s Devonte Johnson won at 5-4.

The tiebreaker in the high jump is fewest trials and then fewest misses.

Stokes (11.75) and Bickham (11.80) ran third and fourth in the 100, as Johnson won the race in 11.44.

Harry (24.36) and Brooks (24.53) were third and fourth during the 200. Johnson captured the race in 23.00.

James finished third for the 400 (55.61). Covenant Christian’s Payton Ross was the winner with a time of 54.55.

Nick Blackburn took fourth for the discus (94-4). Covenant Christian’s Devyn Allen, the field MVP, won at 137-0.

Varnado finished second in the team competition with 67 points. Covenant Christian won the meet with 166 points, as five teams tallied at least one point.

St. Martin’s (50) was third, followed by Ridgewood Prep (48) and Ecole Classique (22).

Several other athletes competed for Varnado.

Magee was sixth in the 400 (1:05).

Jhaquawn McConnell (2:41) and Allen (3:06) ran sixth and ninth in the 800, which Covenant Christian’s Owen Pellegrin won in 2:08.

Kevin Boudreaux finished fifth in the 1,600 (5:42), as St. Martin’s Antonio Imbornone won with a time of 4:38.

Covenant Christian’s Bailey Robichaux was the track MVP.
