3 VHS athletes win an event at district meet

Varnado’s Jaden Foster, Quierra Bickham and Yienna Kemp captured an event each during the District 8-1A meet held Wednesday at St. Martin’s Episcopal.

Foster was victorious in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.09 seconds. She also finished third in the long jump (13 feet, 4.25 inches).

Bickham won the long jump at 15-6.25.

Kemp took first place in the javelin at 87-0.

Athletes competing in Wednesday’s meet had the chance to advance to the Region 3-1A meet, which takes place Monday, April 25, at Ponchatoula.

Ke’arria Green is moving on in two events. She took second in the shot put (26-6) and third in the 200 (30.78). Covenant Christian’s Brionte Jasper topped the shot put at 26-8 and Covenant Christian’s Marianna Charles won the 200 in 27.42.

TyQuasia Allen was third in the javelin (80-5) and fourth in the shot put (24-5).

Tyisha Newkirk had a third-place finish in the 100 (13.86), as Covenant Christian’s Marianna Charles won at 12.67.

Destiny Keys took third for the 400 (1:13). Covenant Christian’s Symphony Brown, the track MVP, was the winner in 1:02.

Tonisha Brister was third during the triple jump (16-2.5), as Ecole Classique’s Chelsea George won with a distance of 27-3.5.

Varnado took third place among the teams with 57 points. Covenant Christian won with 147 points, as five teams scored at least one point.

St. Martin’s (68) was second, Ecole Classique (30) finished fourth, followed by Ridgewood Prep (18).

Several other athletes competed for Varnado. Kaylynn Roberts was eighth in the 400 (1:36).

Brittany Smith was sixth in the 800 (3:29), which Brown won in 2:36.

Mykerra Jackson was sixth in the discus (48-9).

Covenant Christian’s Shania Billiot was the field MVP.
